Aesculus hippocastanum is a large deciduous, synoecious tree, commonly known as horse-chestnut or conker tree.
Aesculus chinensis, the Chinese horse chestnut , is a tree species in the genus and found in eastern Asia.
The seed of Aesculus chinensis contains triterpenoid saponins and flavonoids, such as aescuflavoside and aescuflavoside A, which are glycosides of quercetin.
The seed extract is a mixture of saponins, standardized to around 20 percent aescin (escin) is used for its venotonic effect, vascular protection, anti-inflammatory and free radical scavenging properties.
Aescin is the main active compound in horse chestnut, and is responsible for most of its medicinal properties.
