Function:
1. Antioxidant effect. Ergothiamine is a kind of natural amino acid derived from plants and can be accumulated in animals. Studies have proved that it has the effect of antioxidant, which can effectively remove -OH, chelate ferrous ions and copper ions, and prevent H2O2 from generating -OH under the action of iron ions or copper ions. It also inhibits copper ion-dependent oxygenated hemoglobin oxidation and the peroxidation of arachiidonic acid that occurs when myoglobin is mixed with H2O2. Ergothioneine is also potent at removing hypochlorous acid, thus preventing the inactivation of a 1- antiprotease. However, it does not inhibit lipid peroxidation in the presence of iron ions.
2. Protective effect on cells. Protects red blood cells from neutrophils from normally functioning or morbidly inflammatory sites.
3. Anti-inflammatory effect. Ergothiain can inhibit peroxynitroso-anion mediated oxidation of amino acids, such as tyrosine nitrification, thus providing a viable treatment for inflammation.
